Bird’s Eye View of Victoria, Vancouver Island B. C. 1878 36x24" print ($60 CAD)
American artist Eli S. Glover has two pieces of work in the Civic Atlas, this one and the in-worse-condition-but-just-as-splendid London in 1872 print. I don’t know if this Victoria one was origianlly in colour as well, but it kind of doesn’t need it--I’ve never before seen anything like the standing shadowed type spelling “Victoria Harbour,” “James Bay” and “Straits of Fuca.” They’re the typographic cherry on top of a wonderfully executed sundae. I managed a considerable amount of folding and yellowing on the Library of Congress original, and I offer reprints of this with a half-inch margin.
