Panoramic View of Charlottetown Prince Edward Island 1878 24x18” print ($40 CAD)
When the Prussian-American artist Albert Ruger came to draw Charlottetown, he’d already made 200 images of North American cities and was at the top of his game. Not only is every building in Charlottetown represented here, he went as far as including the paddle steamer Heather Belle at bottom right. It was built at the Duncan shipyard (on the waterfront at centre), and island poet John LePage wrote a poem dedicated to that ship in 1867, which you can read all about right here. Anyway, before you mistake me for a PEI historian, you should dig through the excellent award-winning Sailstrait history blog through and through. I’m offering reprints of this image unframed with a half-inch margin.
