"Eggs and Egg Products" print (1973)
This minimalist beauty was the first Department of Agriculture booklet cover I came across, and I'd like to thank Blair Thompson's incredible Canadamodern.org website for making that fateful introduction. In some ways it's cutting edge; its aesthetic is time zones ahead of previous egg publications from 1947 and 1961. My suspicion is that its (uncredited and anonymous) circle-loving federal civil servant designer had been designing ag covers since the previous year, based on a few typographic and geometric clues. See 1972's Production Latiere au Canada, Tuberous Begonias, Ticks, and The Saddle Horse for other examples of what I assume to be their excellent work.
UPDATE: I've just been informed that the late Mary Brett is the designer behind this (and other) Department of Agriculture pamphlet covers from this era. I'm excited to learn more about her and her work, and will post any updated information here.
