A master calligrapher is worth their weight in gold, and someone in the Department of Agriculture's design studio was put to great use on this and a few other mid-century  pamphlets. Take a look elsewhere in my collection at 1947's "Home Canning of Fruits and Vegetables," the two 1950's booklets about berries, and 1951's "Salads All the Year 'Round" and "Mushroom Collecting for Beginners" and you'll see the same confident and creative script deployed.

Also of note: how wartime economics affected how this image was made and printed. In contrast to the relatively smooth and uniform paper later Department of Agriculture booklets were printed on, this one's paper is coarse and grainy, with many white pulpy bits texturing the navy and red (especially the navy). Good paper was scarce, so they must've shifted down to a cheaper grade. Similarly, only two colours were used, the designer cleverly overlapping the navy and red to produce an emphasizing black outline.

A booklet cover reproduction available at 12x18" or 24x36" on Epson Enhanced Matte 192 gsm paper printed with Epson UltraChrome XD2 archival ink. Sold in an open edition, unframed. The Dominion Department of Agriculture wordmark on this cover has been replaced with the words ”Dominion Home Economics” due to Section 9 of the Canadian Trademarks Act.
