Besides being a handsome example of what prodigious urban view artist Thomas Mortimer Fowler could do, this Winnipeg print is part of a prairie mini-drama based on perspective. This Winnipeg view is looking westward with Point Douglas up front, dramatically jutting at the viewer and throwing the north-is-up convention out the window and minimizing the size of St. Boniface. At the same time, Fowler drew this image of St. Boniface. It's curiously angled eastward, as if his benefactors in St. Boniface instructed them to ignore the existence of Winnipeg, entirely. I'll leave it up to local historians to figure out what really happened while I watch and be amused.
